It’s been over five years since the first Microsoft HoloLens was released to the public, and around the same time, sites such as Naughty America and Badoink were promising to deliver augmented reality porn to the masses in the near future.
Five years later, it’s a good time to take a brief look at the state of play for AR porn and how close we really are to having mass market AR glassses we can comfortably view holographic girls through.
As reported here in recent weeks, Badoink has finally joined Naughty America in making good on its promise of AR porn. Still in a demo mode, the Badoink AR girl I tried on my smartphone did look impressive. Now just ahead of the Uncanny Valley, these close to 100% accurately captured (through ‘voumetric’ technology) girls move fluidly and are placed quite convincingly into your real world surroundings.
The problem remains that there are still no lightweight AR glasses we can wear to view them through. Having to hold your phone up to experience the AR porn is going to be a stumbling block until the arrival of true AR glasses. So how far away are we from that?
Well it could be that we are not far away at all, and the first glasses could arrive from companies such as Apple and Facebook as early as this year (2021). However, we should be aware by now, that AR predictions usually are a little slower in coming true than anticipated, and the likelihood is that it will be 2022, or even 2023 before a big tech company launches truly mass market lightweight AR glasses.
Facebook are certainly bringing out a pair of ‘smart glasses’ in 2021. However, it’s widely anticipated that these glasses wont have much in the way of true AR capabilities, and that they will rather just feature data overlay. So the 3D holographic girls of Naughty America and Badoink are unlikely to be viewable on these glasses. However, they are likely just a ‘dry run’ for a version 2.0 that will have advanced AR features. These may be another couple of years away.
The most anticipated AR glasses of all, are of course those of tech giant and trend setter Apple. The augmented reality ambitions of this company are well documented. Its current CEO sees it as the ‘next platform of computing’ and have already employed a team of over 1,000 leading AR professionals to design and build their AR glasses. It’s a question of when and not if, but the probability is that they wont appear until 2023 at the earliest. In the meantime, Apple are expected to debut a virtual reality headset sometime in the next year or so, and this may have some limited AR features.
